Re: Where to install the knock sensro

I don't think the oil pressure sensor is a good place as it's too far from the combustion chamber.

Good results with Phormula knock sensor

I can now report that I'm pretty pleased with the Phormula knock sensor kit. I fretted for quite a while about the retrofit sensor mounting, but in practice the solution was pretty obvious. There is a boss on the left hand side of the block high up and at the front of the engine. It's as close as yo...

Tuning

High speed knock is just too damaging to be worth the risk. It also lets me be braver with my tuning experiments.

Aftermarket knock sensors

I'm going to try adding a knock sensor to my Ford XFlow engine and I was wondering if anyone here has done it. The offerings at http://www.phormula.co.uk/ look worth a go, but has anyone tried them?

DIY mapping experience

I thought I'd share my experiences trying to map the ignition myself. When I initially installed the Megajolt I just loaded up a map that matched a standard distributor. With a bit of tweeking it ran better than a distributor, and gave better gas mileage. Just fiddling with the map didn't really mak...

Megajolt and EDIS current

The Megajolt and EDIS hardly draw any current, but the coils need 5-8 amps in pulses. My test rig wont run off a 4A bench supply but runs fine off a 15A supply, even though the average current draw is less than 2A.

Missfire cured, credit where due

My system had been suffering from an intermittent missfire for a stupidly long time, and I'd changed the Megajolt, EDIS, coilpack, VR sensor, plugs, battery and ingnition switch. As it had run for a couple of years without any problems, I thought substituting the faulty component was all I needed to...

Thanks for that. I checked the output and electrically they are all equivalent. The top one uses a different connector, but it's mostly about shape. I was using the top one, but the car has developed an intermittent loss of power. I've changed the EDIS and coilpack with no improvement, so now I'm ch...

Crank sensors, what have I got

Why does the world need so many different VR crank sensors? Does anyone know how I can identify them?

Thanks

Thanks Nitropixie. I had tried the V3 configuration software and that worked, so I'm up and running again. Now I just have to diagnose my original problem, which is an occasional major loss of power above 3200 RPM. Some days it's fine, other days it isn't. Sigh.

Configurator and megajolt compatibility between versions

I seem to be fairly up the creek etc. I can't get my old V2 configurator software to find any comm ports (Windows XP, real ports or USB VCP) on my laptop or my desktop machine. I've also tried the latest V4.02 configurator, but that doesn't work either. I haven't been paying attention for a while, b...

Warm up?

Surely you want the fan off even on idle when the engine has just been started. A wait of 5 minutes or so before first operation might fix that, but then how would you deal with a hot start? Remember that cold running is when the bulk of engine wear happens.

What's wrong with a thermo-switch.

Why not TPS

Any reason why you don't want to use the TPS?
