Barry,
Yep, the radio shack part you purchased should work just fine.

The MR2's tach (and probably many other OEM units) requires a high voltage kickback pulse from the coil in order to operate correctly. The thing to do is adapt a simple diode circuit to sense the kickback from both coils. I updated the EDIS information page with this information: http://picasso.org/...

I would stick with the 1N4004 part. the diodes are used for flyback control (like when you control relays, the diodes absorb the voltage kickback when the relay coil de-energizes). The higher voltage rating of the 1N4004 part is needed to absorb this spike.

The Ford EDIS module takes care of the hard work regarding synchronizing itself to the teeth on the wheel. All the MJLJ does is tell the ford module what advance to go to. The EDIS module "asks" for the advance command on the PIP line- the MJLJ "answers" back with the appropriate...

Your best bet is to get a plug wire set for the original car (93 ford escort, for example) and take apart the wires and adapt them to your original wires.

Updated sensor and wheel mounting information
http://picasso.org/mjlj/?q=node/view/2
At the bottom I detailed how the sensor should be mounted in relation to TDC, for the different EDIS modules. Hopefully this should help the installation process!
