I think I remember seeing this effect with the old Java configurator, so it could be a 'feature' of the MJLJ firmware. Maybe the RPM value is not updated when there is no PIP signal from the EDIS?

Your capacitors should work ok. If they are polarised it would be worth checking that they are all the correct way round.

You can check if the charge pump circuit is working by measuring the voltage at pins 2 and 6 of the MAX232. You should measure approx +10V on pin 2 and -10V on pin 6.

If it is a 2.0 Zetec it should work correctly. The required 36-1 pattern is part of the flywheel. AFAIK you just need to connect to the existing sensor.
