I've tested on iOS 10.2.1 and it works, there is no error message when exiting the app.

Ok, I was thinking about situations where I can't reach the menu, like no touchscreen or mouse cursor. In raspbian, the CTRL+C works well when the app is started from run_racecapture.sh, but not as good when it is started from boot_racecapture.sh, as the screen freezes. It's exactly the scenario you reproduced, but the app doesn't come back here. It also happens if I lock the screen and try to bring the app back.
