You could try a PCMCIA - RS232 card - but they are hard to find, and can be expensive. This assumes that you have a PCMCIA slot!

What's the specification for the VR signal? I've started playing with PIC processors (again) and a VR emulator sounds like an ideal application.

If all fails, RTFM - Read The Manual! ;) The firmware goes into the chip in the MJ unit - if you bought a ready-made unit or a kit, then you needn't bother as it will be installed already. Absolutely! You should have a nice light brown colour if everything's about right (apart from when the cold-start is on).

Don't trust a timing light to give sensible results! The wasted-spark coilpack sends a high-voltage puls down 2 leads simultaneously - one is a positive pulse, and the other is negative. One will trigger the light, and the other won't.
