Rainwater and electrics don't mix! (why am I telling a mini owner that? :) ). The only answer would be to make sure that all cables and connectors are away from the front of the engine, or behind the plastic screen if you've got one of those, and fit waterproof connectors (or waterproof boots). Not ...

You could try a PCMCIA - RS232 card - but they are hard to find, and can be expensive. This assumes that you have a PCMCIA slot! :D

What's the specification for the VR signal? I've started playing with PIC processors (again) and a VR emulator sounds like an ideal application.

If all fails, RTFM - Read The Manual! ;) The firmware goes into the chip in the MJ unit - if you bought a ready-made unit or a kit, then you needn't bother as it will be installed already. If Brent issues an upgrade then the new firmware can be installed by following the instructions on this website...

I've tried it using Wine under Ubuntu (actually Xubuntu) - the app runs, but I haven't tried connecting to my MJ yet.

I suspect that getting to the serial port will be the hard bit...

which raises a point worth remembering: if you take one lead off, you are killing two cylinders. the old school method of pulling off leads, one by one, to find a 'bad' cylinder, wont work in the same way with a wasted spark setup. That hadn't occured to me! Could be very confusing, if you didn't k...

Hi Tom, I'll answer your question here, rather than reply to the e-mail! As far as I understand it, each side of the coil (e.g. 1-4, or 2-3) fires together, sending a negative spark down 1 lead, and a positive one down the other. The timing light's clip is designed to react to a pulse of a particula...

Do you have any other software on the laptop that may use COM ports? I'm thinking specifically of PDA synchronisation tools (Palm, etc) - these have been found to monopolise the COM ports, blocking other software (this has happened to people trying to communicate with Megasquirt, MegaJolt Lt and JAW...

Mine goes like this: OPTION INPUT ----------------/\/\/\/\/--------------------- 12v | | | | | |----| | | | | CHASSIS The idea is that with the switch open the input is high, and with it shut it's low. I can't remember what value the resistor is - 2.2k rings a bell, but even when connected across fr...

Thanks, but I've already done that. OK then, simply solder a wire onto each of the selected tabs - just give the tab a very gentle scrape with a penknife, or rub it with a bit of very VERY fine emery paper if you've got some, then wipe it clean with some denatured alcohol or similar (in the ...

That's the boring bit! :) You have to get hold of keyboard mapping software (see links on the page mentioned below), connect it to your computer and start to connect tags with a bit of wire. Hold one end onto the first tag and touch the second, then the third, and so on, noting what key each combina...

Absolutely! You should have a nice light brown colour if everything's about right (apart from when the cold-start is on).

Apart from the mixture, are you sure that your cold-start/choke mechanism is off?

The voltage ends up a huge amount more negative on one terminal, and a huge amount more positive on the other, relative to the chassis. I can't explain why you (and I) got intermittent flashes on one lead, and strong flashes on the other - it happened that way for me too. I can only suggest that the...

Don't trust a timing light to give sensible results! The wasted-spark coilpack sends a high-voltage puls down 2 leads simultaneously - one is a positive pulse, and the other is negative. One will trigger the light, and the other won't.

Been there, done that...
