This is a non-official answer. :) In Windows Device Manager, does it show up as a COM port when you plug it in by USB, before trying to use the RCP app? If so, you can probably talk to it by a terminal program (like putty or termite), and then send the command 'resetConfig' to put it back to factory...

Just brainstorming.. if you can get a logic pulse (0-5V or 0-12V) out of your IR sensor, you could hook that to a GPIO input on the RCP, then log that channel at high speed to find start/finish crossing times in your logs.
