Serial cable question

Post by JamesC »

Hi there,

I need to get a USB > Serial cable - and looking on eBay most of them are USB > female serial.

Will this plug directly in to the MJLJ?

All the ones I see are USB > male serial eg
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0000679563
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 9741859776
etc

So I'm a bit confused :-(

They are like this so that they give you the same RS232 connector that you would have on a PC if you were to have a real RS232 serial port on the PC ie male pins sticking out.

If you get one like the first URL above, then it will plug straight into the MJLJ - you need to make sure it's long enough if you have the MJLJ mounted in the car however.

Or you can plug a normal "straight-thru" serial extension cable into the adapter with 9-pin female at one end (for the end of the adapter) and 9 pin male at the other end (for the MJLJ). Like this one..

There're loads of options

You can use the USB>Serial bridge with a short straight through serial lead, or use a USB extension like this -

You'll just need to unscrew the retaining nuts from the DB9 MJLJ connector.

Get these

You will need

1 <a target="_blank" href="http://cgi.ebay.com/New-USB-to-RS-232-S ... -Serial
1 DB9F DB9M serial cable, 25 feet

Should be $10 and $15 from eBay

Once you get USB-to-Serial, first thing you should do is pop the CD in and install drivers, Before you insert the adapter into the USB.
