Which SD Cards?

Post by Tango »

I had a couple of questions about the SD cards used in the Race Capture Pro.
There was a blog update that mentioned some small issues with some of the SD cards.

We want to get our SD cards soon and wanted to buy the correct ones.

Which SD cards will work best for our weekend races with LeMons and Chump?
- Brand
- Capacity
- Size (micro, mini, standard)
- Type ( SD, SDHC, SDXC,etc)

Thanks!

Hi Tango,

Just about any 2-32GB SD or SDHC card should work. The firmware is not compatible with SDXC, but that should be ok because it would take a very long time filling up a 64GB card- even at highest logging rate :)

We've tested with SanDisk, Samsung, Patriot and Maxell cards with success.

Try a card and report back how well it works!

Hi Brent,
Thanks. We'll pick one up and let everybody know what we found out.
Our race in June will be the first time for us to try out the RCP.

Awesome, let us know.

Hopefully you'll actually try it out before then! ;)

I'm using an old 1GB SD card I had lying around so it can work with cards of less than 2GB.

It really does work with SDHC? My computer itself doesn't even like SDHC cards, I have to use a USB adapter to get it to read them. That's great news that SDHC is compatible because I can also use that type of card for my digital camera.

What size card is appropriate for a couple of track sessions? Say up to three or four 20 or 30min sessions of logging most of the channels? From those with experience, how many MB or GB of data are the logging files?

Even at the highest logging rates the usage is modest. a 2GB card would work fine for you. We've tested up to 32GB cards, so let us know if your cards work!

4gb Centon SDHC Class 6 card. Worked like a champ, and it was a cheap card I used for an older video camera. I want to say it was using maybe 100kb per minute of an autox so I doubt you will come close to filling most any modern SD card with the data.

Just made some sample logfiles on my sofa.

Sandisk Extreme Class 10 8GB SDHC works fine.

Kingston Class 6 4GB SDHC works fine.

Sandisk Ultra Class 10 32Gb microSD works fine with the included adapter!

That was the big surprise, because that means the microSD card could be used in the RaceCapture Pro with adapter, then removed and directly inserted into SmartPhone (without adapter) to read in the data when the App becomes available!

awesome! thanks for the update.

Not long before the initial firmware release I fixed a firmware bug (or rather, added a feature that made it more tolerant of different SD cards) that resolved an issue with about 30-40% of SD cards we were testing.
