Can you help me know my options 1992 OBD1/ 2006 OBD2

I'm a noob so be gentle.

I have been following these forums for a while, not always grasping things because like most DIY'ers I learn by doing, but I need to get pointed in the right direction, and get the latest information since this landscape appears to be ever-evolving.

I've got access to two track cars to test my new RaceCapture Pro 2. 1992 Toyota Paseo Lemons car and a 2006 Nissan 350z track prepped car.

I know with the 1992 Toyota OBD1 port, probably not much I can do as far as datalogging or telemetry of sensor values. I probably need redundant sensors, correct?

With the 2006 Nissan 350z, are we there yet as far as being able to connect to the OBD2 port and get telemetry of engine RPM, Water Temp, Oil Pressure, IAT, etc?

P.S. If you want to point me to some required reading that would help me better understand the relationship between the CAN input on the racecapture pro 2 and the OBD2 port on modern cars, I would be appreciative!

Hi farmerdave,

Correct, for your Toyota you will need dedicated sensors, RaceCapture/Pro does not support the old OBDII data format.

For your Nissan it *might* be possible to pull CAN data either over the OBDII connector or tapping into CAN wires somewhere in your car. For an example of how to do that, read this wiki article I wrote when connecting CAN to my E46 http://www.autosportlabs.net/BMW_E46_CAN .

You will have to research your car/ECU to figure out if it has CAN support. Every car and manufacturer built CAN and OBDII different up to 2008 when they were required by the US to standardize it all.
