Ford RS1600i turbo technics

Post by simon 16i »

after buyiong a genuine turbo technics kit for my mk3 escort rs1600i i was a little miffed that i would be unable to keep using the standard twin coil setup that makes the cars unique, that was until i started researching the mjlj, needless to say its now not only arrived but is installed and running really well, ive been lucky enough to be able to use a mk4 escort efi flywheel which has the 36-1 pattern on the rear and then it was just a case of drilling the cps hole in the correct place, to my knowledge this is the only rs16i turbo still running twin coils :D

also due to the compact size of the mjlj i was able to install it into an original ecu case and reuse the plug fitted to it which meant that the cars wiring loom is completely untouched and looks factory standard even close up

still got to run the engine in and get it on a rolling road but as its the 1.9 'american' cvh and has a hybrid turbo it should be good for the fun side of 250bhp, not a bad upgrade fpr a car designed woth 115bhp!

anyway heres a couple of pics

one of before

the standard 1980's ecu

one after the mjlj is installed, the relays control the fuel shut off system via an output

they are as said above m8 fuel lines, the car still uses the original k jetronic mechanical injection system which uses a metering head, same system thats on all xr3i's, early porsche 924's and merecedes and a lot of renaults

Jesus!!! 250hp from a CVH!!!??? That's on par with a YB engine and my turbo'd XR4i. I hope you get 250.

there are a few 1.6 cvh's out there with nearly 300 bhp m8, ive got a friend with a ZVH conversion with 320bhp,
with full efi injection the 1.9 i have will reach a comfortable and quite reliable 300bhp at about 16 psi

superb!!! The cvh doesn't get much limelight as does the pinto/YB,so I'm amazed

Simon

I just saw your post and it looks great :-)

I have an RS1600i and had her for 21 years.

My car's has been running on the standard ECU + twin coils + gearbox sensor, but she brakes down a lot and since Sep 2014 has not run at all..... (no spark at spark plugs) finding a reliable 2nd hand ECU and gearbox lead for the car is now close to impossible.

I heard about megajolt ECU.

In your post you said the following
-

******

due to the compact size of the mjlj i was able to install it into an original ecu case and reuse the plug fitted to it which meant that the cars wiring loom is completely untouched and looks factory standard even close up

******

I'd like to do the same with my car running her on original twin coils etc.....can you send me info on how you did this ?

or could you do it for me and how much would this cost ?

I'd like to get the CVH ECU kit

But I would not use
-
the new coil pack and connector
I would not use coil pack bracket

hi scrum,

i can convert an ecu for you but you need quite a few parts,

the kit is a bit pricey as you wont use a lot of it

this is what you need

megajolt ecu (buy from webshop on this site ) get a map sensor version
edis 4 module complete with plug and a bit of loom (few inches is enough)
36-1 trigger wheel kit for alternator pulley (from trigger wheels or burton power)
crank sensor
about 1.5m of the sensor cable (its screened 2 core cable)

then you will need an old rsi ecu for the case, and if possible a connector from an old sensor lead, i cando it with just crimps or use a new plug/socket but then you will have to alter the plug on the cars loom.

its a good few hours work to make it all work and ideally will need the car to test it on otherwise it cant be guaranteed in case there are wiring issues on the car or if the trigger wheel is set wrong.

ill pm you my mobile number
cheers

Hi Slider :)

That sounds great :-)

At last a ray of light for my RS16i :-)

I will do as you said on RS forum and check the sensor gap and do other checks (which you all outlined)..... but even if I can get my RS16i running on her original ECU etc.

In the medium term I will still want a megajolt (because as you know) the original ECUs etc are not reliable so your setup sounds perfect.

I have one gearbox lead (which stopped working years ago) so the plug from that could be used in your setup.

I have a spare ECU case (from the original ECU which stopped working 10 years ago, so I had to buy 3 newer ones).

As for other bits you asked for, I'll buy them as this is an investment in the car and she will run the same way as she did with original ECU but she will use a modern ECU and sensor.
