Trigger Wheel mounting - ABF crank pulley

Post by big_john »

Hi all,

Currently undergoing an R1 carb conversion onto a KR (mk2 golf GTI 16V engine)

To aid clearance, I am fitting the alternator set-up from an ABF (mk3 16v) as it lets the alt sit much lower.

Now for my issue:

How can I go about mounting a trigger wheel to the ABF crank pulley?

The trigger wheel I have (bought the complete set-up from someone who ran it on a KR before) was bolted onto a KR pulley, I have removed this and am looking to fit it onto the ABF CP.

The ABF pulley has a rubber damper between the hub and outer wheel.

Would there be an issue with mounting the trigger wheel to the outer wheel?

Cheers for the help

Yes there could be. If the mounting to the cranck shaft is not rigid there is the risk of the trigger wheel momentarily getting too far away from the VR sensor, missing reading a tooth and thus messing up the timing.
