Is 1n4001 interchangeable with 1n4004?

I have literally thousands of the 1n4001 part, would it work the same, would save me a bit from ordering parts. I also have over 300 max232cpe chips if anybody is interested

I would stick with the 1N4004 part. the diodes are used for flyback control (like when you control relays, the diodes absorb the voltage kickback when the relay coil de-energizes). The higher voltage rating of the 1N4004 part is needed to absorb this spike.
