Lead free solder

Post by SteveA »

Before I start assembly, a quick question. Not knowing the spec of the components, can anyone tell me whether they are suitable for assembly with lead free solder or do I need to get some non-RoHS compliant solder?
Lead free solder of course having a higher melting temperature, approx 350 deg C

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Yes, you may use lead free solder for assembling the kit.

What brand/alloy solder are you planning to use?

I plan to use a rosin flux based solder made by Multicore, 99.3% Tin, 0.7% Copper Alloy. Normal type of stuff see use for surface mount compents.

I'm always wary of using lead free solder in a high vibration environment. If you do use it, use it well. It might be wise to add some extra dampening/padding under the unit once in place. I've seen loads of faults caused by lead free solder cracking.
